 A quelles oreilles ce disque est-il destiné ? A ma grande honte je dois avouer qu’après plusieurs écoutes je ne sais toujours pas. Programme réjouissant, pourtant : les 2 concertos aux finales « à variations », comportant qui plus est parmi les plus beaux mouvements lents de la série… Un peu d’appréhension quand même : on croule sous les versions historiques et les références, à chaque époque et à chaque esthétique la (ou les) sienne(s). Ma discothèque en est pleine mais « abondance de bien ne nuit pas » ! Je me précipite sur la notice… Discussion « à bâtons rompus » entre les interprètes : « Quand Mozart a écrit ces concertos, personne ne les avait encore entendus […] les gens n’avaient pas grandi avec la musique de fond de la radio, de la TV, et encore moins avec YouTube... ». Sans blague !? D’où l’idée de réveiller l’auditeur en lui offrant les œuvres comme neuves, « fresh » comme ils disent. Hélas ! L’orchestre est gros et sonne gras, ne recule devant aucun effet anachronique, tellement romantique que par instants on dirait le 1er de Brahms. Le jeu de la pianiste est prosaïque, elle délaisse la recherche du « filo » mozartien et le tout est emporté dans ces perpétuelles variations de tempo qui sont toujours fatales à Mozart, lui qui était si sensible au problème et le résolvait si bien. Bref, pour moi ce disque est une catastrophe, voire une mauvaise action. Si je suis passé à côté d’une grande version de notre époque, excusez-moi. Mais je retourne à ma discothèque et aux partitions. (Olivier Eterradossi) The underlying inspiration for Orli Shaham’s recording of Mozart concertos is her passion to record music that has spoken to her, and driven her, again and again throughout her career. She has chosen to recorded these 2 concertos with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra a musical association she loves and knows intimately, along with David Robertson, a conductor that she knows and loves intimately, David being her husband. Both K.453 and K.491 standout as emblems of the extraordinary theatricality of Mozart’s mature concertos. Each concludes with a final movement cast in variation form, the only 2 examples in Mozart’s piano concertos. The variations are built and developed from a single theme, each variation being a little part of a scene in which the story is being pushed along, and displays Mozart’s mastery of melodic invention and virtuosity as a solo performer. The 2 works also highlight the spirit of dialogue between soloist and orchestra, and there is a very real and tangible sense that every musician involved is acutely aware of listening to each another. “K.453 is not one that’s done as often as the later superstar concerti,” says Orli Shaham “but it’s a really special and mature piece, with lots of really clever ideas.” In K.491, much is left by Mozart for the soloist to decipher - “The manuscript shows several iterations that he tried,” explains Shaham. “Sometimes it’s a leading tone this way, and sometimes it’s a leading tone going the other way. Sometimes he crosses it out. It’s the only concerto I know where you sometimes will get four lines of what the piano is supposed to be playing.” This recording is Orli Shaham’s sixth recording for Canary Classics. Her recording of Steve Mackey’s Stumble to Grace (CC-11) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by David Robertson received wide critical acclaim on release in 2014, and her pedigree as a “first-rate Mozartean” shines though in abundance in her recording of Mozart Violin Sonatas with brother Gil Shaham (CC-01).
