The Morgenthaler and Röllin duo is one of the most exciting Swiss jazz bands, owing to its unconventional music, its intelligent arrangements and original sounds. In 2006, guitarist Urs Röllin and trombonist Robert Morgenthaler played together as a duo for the first time. Since then, they have been continuously developing their ideas, resulting in their own unmistakable sound. Their composition and improvisation coincide. The press has praised Morgenthaler and Röllin for "building bridges and renewing duo-jazz". "Jazzzeit" says: "Despite their unmistakable cutting edge approach, they reveal attractive grooves, songs, blues lines and electronic alienation, whilst relying exclusively on their instruments' range of expression." In 2011, the duo will be touring with their new programme and will be presenting their second album, "OFF ROAD". It will be published on January 14th, 2011 under the well-known UNIT RECORDS label. This music is characterized by urgency and timeliness. Morgentaler and Röllin, both excellent instrumentalists, enhance their duo sound by making use of loop effects, thereby redefining it and making music an intellectual and sensual adventure. Blind mutual understanding gives a multi-dimensional modern expression to their music. - What does it sound like? Well, like contemporary Jazz, that helps itself to rock, pop and world music. Calm moments, when Morgenthaler's trombone reminds us of black soul voices, give way to sophisticated grooves and passionate acoustic thunderstorms. "OFF ROAD" is cross-country mobile: Morgenthaler and Röllin are moving along on and off the familiar roads and paths of contemporary music. They are leading the listener through various music worlds around the globe. The unique CD cover: Ralph Schraivogel, a graphic artist of international fame, designed the cover. He had already provided the cover of the first album, "FREAKWAVE/SHORTCUTS". Engraving the case's lid, he made each CD a unique work of art. His circle shaped stress marks lead us to see a three-dimensional ornament that appears to be raised or deepened, depending on the observer's perspective. This idea, his work's elegance and dynamics, meets the music's gesture and supports it - which makes for an additional point against digitally "ripping" any music - and for its holistic perception.
