MOONSUN - COCOA "Thank you for the music. You are a very important musician for at least three reasons: because the music itself is new, intense, and fascinating, because it's being made out of personal organic necessity, and because other gifted musicians obviously find it fascinating to play." Lawrence J. Kart The gentleman who wrote these lines after hearing the album "Physique"(Omnitone) to a musician he had not heard of until then knows what he is talking about: Larry Kart is a former co-editor of Down Beat magazine who has published an extraordinary collection of encounters with many if not most legendary jazz personalities entitled "Jazz in Search of Itself". One might be hard pressed to find a better description of Schweizer's music. Indeed he does invent highly emotional new music, which is being brought to life by world class musicians and in turn offers them a catalyst of sorts to explore ideas which might remain undiscovered elsewhere.Schweizer describes the essence of this "maximal music" as "groove and freedom. It's music for everyone (including jazz lovers, with a wink) beyond the smallest common denominator. It's about the drama of real (mental) life as opposed to the mimickri of "like so-and-so' and "as if this-and-that'". Which explains Schweizer's reluctance to answer questions concerning artistic points of reference. To him, any comparison is optional: "Of course it does sound like jazz, and anyone who prefers to do so is welcome to call it that. The music is meant to bring pleasure, and there are no preconditions to be met in order to enjoy it." At the same time, this undogmatic is no novice. Schweizer lived in New York for years and besides being involved in a large number of projects toured with the Mingus big band and the George Gruntz concert jazz band. Musicians who participated in his earlier recordings and tours include among many others Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), Donny McCaslin, Seamus Blake, Alex Sipiagin, Jason Moran, Billy Hart, Gene Jackson, and the press spoke about "some of the most exciting music contemporary jazz has to offer", "one of the greats of his instrument", "the most innovative concert of the year". Thus the group MOONSUN from the present recording COCOA, too, played regularly during Schweizer's New York days besides touring in Europe. By way of many concerts played together in different contexts these musicians have since made themselves known among listeners for their superb virtuosity and refined taste, and their group playing is beginning to influence the next generation. To sum it up, let the public decide whether a certain music lover from New York is right, who upon listening on the website wrote spontaneously as Larry Kart did: "This new album is off the hook - unbelievably good!"
