L’oratorio profane de Michael Tippett "A child of our time" (1944) est centré sur Herschel Feibel Grynszpan, juif d’origine polonaise, qui, le 7 novembre 1938 a assassiné Ernst vom Rath, secrétaire à l’ambassade d’Allemagne à Paris dans son bureau. Il n’avait que 17 ans. S’ensuivit les pogroms monstrueux qui s’abattirent sur les juifs d’Allemagne lors de la funeste "Nuit de cristal" du 9 au 10 novembre 1938. Pour Tippett, ardent socialiste et pacifiste, le jeune juif polonais poussé au terrorisme par désespoir représente le conflit entre l’ombre et la lumière qui est en tout être. "Je voudrais connaître mon ombre et ma lumière : sans cette connaissance, nous sommes condamnés à répéter la Nuit de cristal" écrit-il. L’œuvre en trois parties comme le Messie de Haendel est confiée à quatre solistes, chœur mixte et orchestre. Elle emploie un texte simple du compositeur. La grande originalité de la partition est l’apparition de cinq superbes Negro Spirituals, sorte d’arche victimaire entre les pogroms des juifs d’Europe et les lynchages des Noirs américains dans les années 1930.
