Metanoia means a radical change in the way we think and behave. In the context of religious practices, it is also atonement and repentance. On his latest album, Polish-American composer Mark Nowakowski guides listeners on the path of spiritual conversion. The six pieces included on the album are not only an inspiration to reflect on the moral condition of contemporary man, but also a showcase of the composer’s creative talent appreciated by, among others, Gramophone magazine. He is at ease when confronted with a choir, a cello octet, a piano trio, a vocal trio, an early music Baroque ensemble or the organ and electronics. The whole is coherent despite the diversity, and the composer’s musical language refers to the sounds of previous eras. At the same time, an individual scale of emotions is maintained – from meditative calm to anger and passion. The performers fully met the composer’s intentions, directing the listener’s attention to fundamental issues in fully committed interpretations.
