 Très récemment, les États-Unis commencèrent à s’intéresser aux compositrices afro-américaines. D’où l’enregistrement en première mondiale de quelques œuvres représentatives de Margaret Bonds totalement inconnue en nos contrées. Née à Chicago, elle devint rapidement une artiste afro-américaine de premier plan mêlant talents de pianiste, de compositrice et d’enseignante qui la menèrent à Brooklyn puis à Los Angeles où elle termina sa vie. Son œuvre principale, « La ballade du Roi Noir », proposée ici, est une cantate en hommage à Martin Luther King lequel emprunte les traits du Roi Mage Balthazar. Une composition agréable, sans être essentielle, typique d’une musique américaine où néo-romantisme, comédie musicale et gospel se mélangent allégrement. Plus originales sont à mon sens les cinq pièces pour baryton et harpe proposées en complément. Le tout est interprété par d’excellents artistes afro-américains et le chœur new-yorkais Dessof sous la conduite du chef afro-américain Malcolm Merriweather. Une rareté, rendue avec sincérité, mais au minutage rachitique de 35 minutes ! With an expressly written libretto by Bonds’ friend Langston Hughes, this Christmas cantata which focuses on Balthazar, the dark-skinned king who journeyed to Bethlehem to witness the birth of Jesus Christ, is beautifully interpreted by New York City-based The Dessoff Choirs and Orchestra, outstanding soloists soprano Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Lucia Bradford and tenor Noah Stewart, under the baton of their charismatic conductor, Malcolm J. Merriweather. Bonds authority Dr. Ashley Jackson contributes the inspired liner notes. This unique seasonal album also includes a selection of specially arranged songs, including a setting of Hughes’ seminal poem I, Too, Sing America, performed by baritone Merriweather and Jackson on solo harp.
