“Shlof, mayn feygele,” the Yiddish lullaby sung by Helene Schneiderman, is one of the most moving songs to appear on the “Lullaby CD (Wiegenlieder),” a coproduction between Carus and SWR2 (Southwest German Radio). The CD is part of a larger lieder project which was produced jointly by Carus and SWR2 (Southwest German Radio) within the framework of a lieder project encompassing various types of songs. Singing this lullaby for the CD brought back many childhood memories to Helene Schneiderman of her Jewish heritage and this led to a wish to discover more about the rich, beautiful, often melancholy tradition of the Yiddish song and to record a CD of these songs together with her accompanist, the pianist Götz Payer. The result is the enclosed CD, “Makh tsu di Eygelekh,” which will be released on 1 March 2013 (in Germany). The present CD also contains four recordings by Helene Schneiderman’s parents. The story of her parents is inextricably tied to this production as a personal, emotional testimony of the universal power of music. Judith Schneiderman was imprisoned in various concentration camps and was able to survive this ordeal primarily by singing in performances for German officers. At the end of the war she emigrated to the USA, where she still lives today. In 2009 “I Sang to Survive,” a book of her reminiscences, was published there.
