Avant d’en étoffer l’effectif vocal et d’en adoucir les transitions, Boccherini avait conçu son Stabat Mater pour une soprano soliste et cinq cordes. C’est sous cette forme qu’il est aujourd’hui le plus enregistré (voir en particulier la superbe incarnation de Dorothee Mields avec le quatuor Salagon). L’œuvre, qui s’inscrit dans la lignée de Pergolese, emprunte ou cède des éléments thématiques à d’autres œuvres de Boccherini (comme le quatuor en Ut mineur G.214 auquel il est parfois couplé au disque). Ce disque Digressione nous propose une perspective très différente : côté instrumental j’entends un je-ne-sais-quoi néo-romantique dans la texture des cordes fournies de l’orchestre de San Remo, et côté soliste Gabriella Costa me laisse perplexe. Sa Vierge a parfois des accents de soubrette, ses registres pas toujours cohérents sont fatigants, mais surtout elle peine à rendre les mots intelligibles (à moins qu’il ne s’agisse d’un problème de captation). Or si Boccherini n’a pas particulièrement cherché à traduire le sentiment doloriste du Stabat Mater franciscain, les effets qu’il a mis en œuvre pour en souligner certains passages ne peuvent se comprendre sans une claire perception du texte. Je retourne donc avec Mields (Carus), Boncompagni (Brilliant Classics) ou Karthauser (Ricercar). (Olivier Eterradossi)

Boccherini is a leading figure in the history of music that preceded the advent of the first Viennese School; his contribution to the development of the quartet and quintet form was decisive and its importance is acknowledged by both Italian and foreign scholars. His music stands out for its freshness and melodic variety and for the refined and elegant ideas, in a harmonious discursive flow. Boccherini wrote two versions of the Stabat Mater: a first one in 1781 for soprano and strings (the one contained in this CD) and a second one in 1800 for soprano, alto, tenor and strings, which entered the repertoire and was made, according to a note by the author reported on the manuscript copy of the Paris Conservatoire, "to avoid the monotony of a single voice and too much work for this single singing voice". Nevertheless, he writes a page of sincere and pure religious feeling that in the final AMEN touches one of the most inspiring moments of his creative personality. The masterful performance of the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Giancarlo De Lorenzo, and the convincing prayerful interpretation of the soprano Gabriella Costa, make this recording a sure reference in the discography of Boccherini's works.
