Luctus – Sorrow. This album presents a diversely, yet expressive collection of songs for soprano accompanied by organ, all written by contemporary Polish composers related to the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. These are works composed by two generations of Polish composers: Romuald Twardowski (born in 1930), Marian Sawa (1937–2005), Pawel Lukaszewski (born in 1968), Marcin Tadeusz Lukaszewski (born in 1972) and Piotr Tabakiernik (born in 1986). The album’s title comes from the crowning piece composed by Pawel Lukaszewski – Luctus Mariae (Mary’s Sorrow). The artists – Dorota Calek and Marietta Kruzel-Sosnowska – entitled their album Luctus for several reasons. The recorded pieces follow the thematic journey of Mary through the Passion and her mourning. They are connected through their Latin liturgical texts used in all compositions. And two of them – by R. Twardowski and M. T. Lukaszewski – are also linked through the source of text, the prayer book of Gertruda Mieszkówna; and finally, all of the pieces are connected by the instrumental line-up of soprano solo and organ.
