 Almost a quarter of a century of experience of life separate Karl Berger (who celebrated his 70th birthday last year) and John Lindberg, born in 1959. However, the album “Duets 1” makes an impression that such a difference is hardly possible. Without doubt, awe-inspiring musicians and men of equal standing are at work here. “Duets 1” contains nine songs, which have one thing in common. The perfect harmonization of the two protagonists. In addition, the pieces are very varied. John plucks, bows and taps the bass, while Berger switches between piano and vibraphone, and consequently new variations of sounds are produced continually. Melodic elements, which communicate a feeling of a lot of time and space, alternate with rhythmic, energy-filled ones. In addition to compositions by Karl and John , we can hear two by David Izenzon and one exciting interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s “Peace”. The bassist and composer John Lindberg already began his professional career when he was 16. He has played with big names including Anthony Braxton, Jimmy Lyons, Steve Lacy, Tony Coe, Albert Mangelsdorff and Eric Watson since that time. John has participated in recordings on more than 60 albums since then, including almost two dozen under his own name. He is always searching for new influences and always put a great deal of emphasis of perfecting his playing further. One of his most well known ensembles is the John Lindberg Quartet with Steve Gorn, Susie Ibarra and Baikida Carroll, with whom he released the album “Winter Birds” on Between The Lines in 2005 (BTLCHR 71203). Karl Berger is one of the few German jazz musicians to enjoy top international recognition. Residing in Woodstock/USA today, Karl is not only a jazz musician, but also a musician down to the core. He has worked with Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, John McLaughlin, Pharoah Sanders and Dave Holland just as successfully as with Angelique Kidjo and Bill Laswell. The list of the prizes, which has received, is almost unlimited, including the Downbeat Critics Poll six times. He released a highly recognized CD on Double Moon Records (DMCHR 71029) with “Stillpoint” in 2002, on which John Lindberg also participated.
