Sense and Sensuality Imagine four authors reading out of their books at the same time: they would generate a hopeless entanglement of words, and chaos would win over art. This applies to language: one word at a time. For music, on the other hand, and especially for jazz, the rule is: everything together. The sense of jazz lies in the sensuality that emerges from the sensitive interaction of highly individual characters. This mixture of team-work and distinct individuality brings forth utopian potential. In the case of Leafar, utopia turns into reality. Primus inter pares of this group is Rafael Schilt. He has arranged his compositions, the adaptation of the melody from the cartoon 'Jungle Book' and Domenico Modugno's canzone 'Amara Terra Mia' so that awareness of form and the musicians' desire for freedom are well-balanced. There are, for example, a number of succinct transitions from accurately noted passages to spontaneous improvisation. The latter often unfolds into a dialogue between the saxophonists, where the internationally renowned saxophonist Nat Su blends wonderfully with Schilt, not only soundwise but also conceptionally. The agile lines of bass player Wolfgang Zwiauer often act as a third, autonomous melody voice, and so a fascinating closely-meshed and polyphonic netting emerges. A counter-balance to this complexity is the pop-song melody and the ostinato-grooves which Schilt uses to earth his pieces. Drummer Samuel Rohrer ensures that the gravitational force doesn't become too overpowering. The furious beat-juggler bunches centrifugal forces of different intensity to a polyrhythmic swirl and keeps the band rotating.
