If somebody asks you how you're doing in the Tagalog language of the Philippines, you would say "Mabuti", that is if you're doing fine! This simpatico greeting is the inspiration for the title track of Larry Porter's new CD. Indeed this album is a sort of travelogue. Most of the pieces depict journeys and experiences in far away places or even fantasy worlds. Larry has assembled a new international quartet with young and extremely talented musicians on the Berlin scene: bassist Marco Chacón from Chile, saxophonist Florian Trübsbach from Germany, and drummer Alex Huber from Switzerland. The repertoire features Porter's striking and harmonically rich composing style with some choice tunes contributed by Chacón. In interpreting these songs, the band displays a great feel for ambience, flow, and interplay. The conventional quartet formation takes on an unconventional hue. The vibrancy and spirit of the music tells you: they're doing fine!
