The music of Jorge Villavicencio Gross-mann is rich in allusions to other reper-toires. Although the sound world his mu-sic inhabits is that of twenty-first century modernism, references to earlier music abound. Aspects of the music of Bach and of the Second Viennese School (Schoen-berg, Berg, and Webern) coincide with Grossmann’s own inventiveness and verve. And although he now lives and works in the U.S., his music also is in-formed by the art and culture of South America, where he spent the first part of his life. The works on this recording illus-trate the breadth and depth of all these in-fluences. The Talea Ensemble, Mivos Quartet as well as soloists Kyle Armbrust and Anna D’Errico are amongst the most eminent performers of contemporary mu-sic and make a strong case for Gross-mann’s music.
