Time is a relative thing In 2006, Wolfert Brederode and I recorded this album, ONE. It was the result of an intuitive decision to do some performances as a duo. We sounded good together and I was amazed by all the time and space we could create. It gave me so many ideas to color, to play rhythms, and to use all my percussion instruments with different textures. The album was the start of an intense collaboration between the two of us. Throughout the years as a duo, we’ve performed all over the world. We’ve also worked together in the band Batik, we work together in the Yuri Honing Quartet and participated in different projects with dancers and actors. In 2021 we recorded the album Ruins and Remains together with the Matangi string quartet. This was released on ECM records in 2022. I notice that when I play ONE again after such a long time, the album still tells me a lot about how I want to make music. It is about extending each other’s sound, about space and about creating an unending atmosphere where we can find undiscovered treasures. (Joost Lijbaart)
