The 15th release of Jazz thing Next Generation was the CD “Celebrating Modern Genius“ by the Austrian “HDV Trio“ in November 2006. In the meantime, the trio has gained a large and faithful fan base in Germany and Switzerland, and numerous festivals and club performances have spurred its growth continually. In times during which almost every trio is called the “legitimate successor of e.s.t. or Brad Mehldau“, the HDV Trio“ can hardly be compared to any other band not to mention confused with them. Their individualism in everything – from their compositions to their arrangements and all the way to their philosophic superstructure – is unique. David Helbock, a student of Peter Madsen who also graduated from a classical music college, Lucas Dietrich, who also has classical and modern training, and Marc Vogel, also trained and at home in various genres, have attended numerous workshops and master classes together (among others, taught by Bobo Stenson, George Garzone and Ingrid Jensen). Today, they have an unmistakable trio sound. Their type of compositions and interpretations as well as their interaction with the audience during live performances make them into a noteworthy exception in the world of piano trios. “I have always been a conceptual artist. I consider it important to have a leitmotif which runs through our CD, but also through our complete program,” Helbock stated. And he and his sidemen do not let themselves be distracted from their concept, even if it involves doing something very unusual. Sometimes it sounds very melodic, almost dreamy, and then eruptive cascades break out with thousands of notes full of feeling before flowing back into gentle passages. That perhaps does not make listening easier, but it does make it infinitely exciting and satisfying. You feel as if you had taken a trip around the world in 60 minutes after listening to the CD and/or attending one of their concerts – deeply moved and relaxed at the same time. “The HDV Trio and the present album demonstrate taste, courage, individualism and audacity to the highest degree.” Peter Madsen expresses this succinctly in his liner notes.
