 Harry Partch (1901-1974) est un de ces compositeurs à la marge de la marge, parfois cité quand on se réfère à Morton Feldman ou Terry Riley (pour rester parmi ses compatriotes), ou alors à Karlheinz Stockhausen. Ce partisan de l’intonation juste se distingue par le soin acharné apporté à construire des instruments, souvent adaptés de pianos, guitares ou marimbas, capables de transmettre sa vision musicale s’écartant du tempérament égal. Parmi les quatre pièces de ce recueil, la Sonata Dementia, enregistrée ici pour la première fois et qui donne son titre au disque, prend sa source dans une exploration antérieure au clavier (son Chromelodeon à 43 tons par octave) : d’abord nommée Tonality Flux, cette œuvre en trois mouvements, aux titres émotionnellement chargés (les termes psychopathologiques résonnent probablement aux oreilles de celui qui parle alors de sa psychose naissante), écrite comme une expérimentation (sur des instruments parfois si novateurs qu’ils n’ont encore aucunement été impliqués dans une composition), semble si difficile que Partch doute de sa viabilité – et que la pièce n’est finalement pas enregistrée, même si elle connaît, deux ans plus tard et sous un nouveau titre, une deuxième forme, comme second mouvement de Plectra & Percussion Dances (ce qui n’est pas rare chez Partch). So opens a collection of Partch classics that no one has really heard before. His score for the filmWindsong was edited for the soundtrack, and though music lovers will recognize the material from the subsequently expanded Daphne of the Dunes,the symphonically structured original is much more dramatically crafted, and is presented here for the first time. It turns out that there are actuallyTwelve Intrusions, too, not eleven.And a demented sonata? Oh yes! Though the composer never performed or recorded it, his 1950 composition Sonata Dementia is in threemovements: I. Abstraction & Delusion, II. Scherzo Schizophrenia, and III. Allegro Paranoia. Filled to the brim with humor, flights of fancy, and a febrileimagination, it was later reworked as “Ring Around the Moon,” but what a treat to hear the original in all its zany glory.The Bonus Tracks reveal even more lost treasures: The first-ever recording of Partch as performer, playing what is probably his most famous piece,Barstow: 8 Hitchhiker Inscriptions in front of a live audience in 1942, just a year after it was written.
