Born in Dwinsk (today Daugavpils, Latvia), Fitelberg studied violin with Stanislaw Barcewicz and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski in Warsaw. Early on he attracted attention as a violinist, but it was conducting that became his true vocation. He was among the first Polish conductors to systematically bring the works of contemporary Polish composers such as Szymanowski, Karlowicz, Rózycki, and Szeluto onto concert stages, while also championing the latest European music. He appeared in major concert halls across the continent, collaborated with leading soloists and orchestras, and set new artistic standards through his work at the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Warsaw Opera. After World War I, Fitelberg returned to Poland, where he became a central figure in rebuilding the country’s musical life. In 1947, he took the helm of the newly founded Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, transforming it into an ensemble of international stature and one of the cornerstones of post-war musical culture in Poland. Although Fitelberg dedicated much of his career to conducting and promoting the works of others, he left behind a remarkably interesting body of compositions. These include orchestral works, chamber music, songs, and symphonic pieces.
