Peu de musiciens classiques s’aventurent à enregistrer des pièces populaires et ils sont encore moins nombreux à les faire cohabiter avec des pièces de répertoire. C’est pourtant ce défi que Raghnild Hemsing relève ici avec succès en alternant sur un même disque des pièces jouées sur violon classique et d’autres sur violon Hardanger. Mélange des époques et des sonorités avec la Norvège, le pays natal de la soliste, en fil conducteur. / Par une lecture très expressive - sans excès aucun - de sa sonate en fa majeur pour violon et piano, Hemsing et son pianiste Tor Espen Aspaas nous rappellent qu’avant d’être l’orchestrateur de génie que l’on connaît, Grieg fut surtout un merveilleux mélodiste. On tient là peut-être un autre fil d’un disque tout au long duquel le violon, qu’il soit classique ou traditionnel, place la ligne mélodique au premier plan. S’il fallait encore s’en convaincre, les quatre cordes supplémentaires du violon Hardanger, nommées “cordes sympathiques” du fait de leur mise en résonance spontanée, viendront souligner le chant des cordes principales, frottées quant à elles par l’archet. / En parfaite réponse à Grieg et au contemporain Thoresen, la violoniste nous offre cinq pièces traditionnelles, avec ou sans piano, issues du patrimoine folklorique norvégien. Autant de chants illustrant parfaitement le concept anglo-saxon de “listening music”, opposée à la musique dansée. YR is the debut of an artist with a dynamite personality that is audible in every stroke of the bow. Combining traditional Hardanger fiddle playing and a classical approach at this level is done by few others that Ragnhild Hemsing (1988). From the age of five she has been trained in the local Hardanger fiddle tradition of Valdres as well playing the classical violin. At only 13 she made her debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the year after she was soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Today she is building her international career with a special focus on her unique combination of traditional and classical music. / Grieg in the continental tradition. / You hear it from the first note: Ragnhild is not playing a Norwegian pastiche by the icon Grieg! When given the right care to the traditional remembrances in the music - the way Grieg intended - the result is a big virtuosic violin sonata in the romantic continental tradition. / The tunes of the old masters. / With the traditional Hardanger fiddle in hand, Hemsing proves to possess the undisturbable calmness and finesse so special to the music tradition in Valdres. The two 'lydarlåtter' on the recording are pieces developed not as dance music but as listening music. The Six Village Songs from Lom of Sparre Olsen are also based on traditional tunes, but set out for violin and piano accompaniment by the composer. Past and present meet in the title track In his mesmerising piece for solo violin YR - a word that denotes both giddiness and a drizzling kind of rain - Lasse Thoresen lets traditional archaic building blocks come together as a contemporary way of expression. Here the exceptional qualities of Ragnhild's background comes to the fore, indeed the composer has stated that "Ragnhild plays incredibly, fabulously well!" Together with folk dancer Hallgrim Hansegård she has developed the piece into a stunning stage performance, which is also included on the release as a video.
