Although Edvard Grieg himself arranged only a few works for other instruments, he was very much open to procedures of this kind. And so he certainly also would have reacted very positively to the successful arrangements of some of his much-too-little-noticed songs by the instrumentalists Ramon Jaffé and Andreas Frölich. Here it is the outstanding melodic qualities of these compositions that an instrumental presentation without the texts brings into view. They above all display Grieg’s romantic side. Moreover, both musicians perform Grieg’s Cello Sonata op. 36, in which the composer fully exploits the violoncello’s melodic resources over all its registers, and the Intermezzo in A minor, which was not published until 1979. It probably represents the first movement of a Suite for Cello and Piano that Grieg left unfinished.
