 De Gianella on sait peu de choses, les données biographiques sont lacunaires, hasardeuses et contradictoires. Flûtiste, il est mort jeune, en 1817, est passé de Milan à Paris où il fut première flûte de l’orchestre de l’Opéra Bouffe. Il laisse des compositions pour flûte(s), de la musique de chambre avec flûte, un opéra, un ballet, des airs, et fut joué à la Fenice, à l’Opéra de Paris et à la Scala de Milan. Les trois duos interprétés ici sont des œuvres de longueur sensiblement égale, toutes composées en trois mouvements, mais, en fait, d’une structure beaucoup plus relâchée que celle d’une sonate. Prolixes du point de vue thématique et mélodique, ils sont évidemment avant tout destinés à mettre la flûte en valeur, mais sans user d’une virtuosité gratuite. De la musique de salon de bon aloi, charmante, joyeuse, foisonnante, un peu futile, où rien ne pèse, mais dont on ne saurait dire qu’elle soit vraiment marquante. Rien n’annonce encore le romantisme ici. La harpiste comme le flûtiste sont tout à fait à leur aise dans ce répertoire, qui témoigne encore de l’insouciance aristocratique dans une période pourtant marquée par les débuts de la Révolution (la dédicataire de ces œuvres, Madame de Boufflers fut guillotinée environ 4 ans après leur composition). (Bertrand Abraham) If we re-examine the scanty information we have about his life, we cannot help noticing that he was present and active in the greatest musical institutions of his time, both in Italy and in France. His compositions were staged at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and at the Opéra in Paris, and he performed at the funeral of Domenico Cimarosa, one of the most famous composers in Europe. So his fame among his contemporaries must have been much greater than we can imagine today, as is often the case with musicians and composers who have been undeservedly forgotten. The three concertanti duets for flute and harp op. 2 were published in Paris by Jean-Henri Naderman, in two separate parts : one for flute and one for harp (modern edition edited by Anna Pasetti for Ut Orpheus Edizioni, Bologna, 2002). The work consists of three pieces, each divided into three movements. The title “Duos” in place of “Sonates” may perhaps be explained by the freedom with which the musical material is treated: it does not follow the pattern of the classical sonata, despite the fact that during that period in France the characteristics of the forma-sonata were much vaguer than in other European countries. As a whole, these compositions stand out for variety and richness of melodic invention, and demonstrate Luigi Gianella’s musical creativity.
