 George Gershwin a toujours voulu composer une musique américaine savante, unifiant les multiples racines musicales de son pays (au niveau structurel, rythmique et mélodique), qu’elles proviennent d’Europe, d’Afrique, des Antilles etc. Gershwin a réussi à donner ses lettres de noblesse à cette musique aussi populaire que multiculturelle. Ses compositions très élaborées ont vite été accaparées à la fois par l’intelligentsia américaine friande de comédies musicales, mais aussi par les Jazzmen à une époque où la ségrégation faisait rage, quand le public de Broadway ne se mélangeait pas avec celui de Harlem ! L’histoire du disque montre cette dichotomie où les ‘Songs’ de Gershwin étaient souvent repris librement par les plus grands Jazzmen (Fitzgerald, Holiday, Robeson, Armstrong, Peterson…) mais aussi plus fidèlement par de grandes cantatrices (Te-Kanawa, Norman, Hendricks...). Les vingt Songs proposés ici par Bogumila Tarasiewicz et Wojciech Pruszynski appartiennent indéniablement à la seconde catégorie avec un grand respect du texte, une voix travaillée, accompagnée par un piano précis et engagé, même si le swing n’est pas leur préoccupation première. Ils privilégient les qualités lyriques avec une diction académique à l’inimitable rythmique et à l’accent New-yorkais. Cette optique n’est d’ailleurs pas incompatible avec les aspirations du compositeur. It is a unique combination of European classical music influences with American entertainment music, jazz, blues and, last but not least, ragtime. Many of the featured songs come from musicals, only a few of which are staples. Thanks to an autonomous form of song with piano accompaniment, they secured themselves a constant presence in the vocal repertoire. The interpretation of mezzo-soprano Bogumila Tarasiewicz and Wojciech Pruszynski is kept in a definitely jazz, intimate convention, reminiscent of concerts in the salons of New York’s high society. Specializing in entertainment and jazz music, the pianist joined forces with a renowned interpreter of 19th- and 20th-century vocal music, which resulted in a stylish album captivating with its dynamics and lightness of interpretation. An interesting touch are the piano improvisations, enhancing the atmosphere of a spontaneous performance.
