Un compositeur ? Un chanteur d’abord. Enfant il émerveillait les spectateurs de l’Oper am Gänsermarkt de Hambourg. La mue passé, sa technique parfaite bluffa le Duc de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel qui en fit son musicien. Mais Schürmann se voulait compositeur depuis son adolescence, l’opéra serait son terrain d’élection, pas moins de onze ouvrages tous tombés dans l’oubli, ce que ne peut manquer de faire regretter Die Getreue Alceste qui marquera ses premiers pas lyriques en tant que successeur de Joachim Kaiser à la cour de Brunswick. Une heure d’une musique émouvante, où se conjuguent les influences française et italienne, qui tisse tout un discours subtil pourtant loin de tout rococo. La grande scène d’Alceste au deuxième acte, ses accompagnatos somptueusement expressifs dits et chantés avec art par Hanna Zumsande montrent tout son génie du sensible jusque dans la pompe funèbre qui lui succède. L’œuvre connu une belle carrière à l’opéra de Hambourg alors même qu’elle avait été conçue d’abord pour le théâtre ducal du palais de Wolfenbütel. On ne peut être qu’étonné par cet art du bref qui va à l’essentiel, d’autant qu’il est ici défendu avec éloquence par une troupe qui a éprouvé l’œuvre à la scène, cela s’entend, de l’Admeto virtuose d’Alan Harrari à l’Alceste si noble d’Hanna Zumsande. Et si Ira Hochman et son Barockwerk Hamburg avaient ici initié le premier volume d’une réappréciation nécessaire des opéras de cet acteur notoire de la scène lyrique allemande baroque ? In 2016, almost three hundred years after the composition of Georg Caspar Schürmann’s Die getreue Alceste, barockwerk hamburg presented a semi-scenic performance of this opera in the atrium of the Hamburg State and University Library. The audience welcomed this revival with frenetic applause, and thereafter consideration was given as to how it might be possible to convey the extremely positive impression created by Schürmann’s music to a broader listening audience. The abridged version on this CD contains the most important elements of the action as well as the musical highlights of the work. In his text the booklet author Jürgen Neubacher guides us through the action with a synopsis and explanatory inserts in square brackets. In keeping with the ancient Alcestis story, love and death are the two central themes of the opera, and their emotionally charged development by the librettist and the composer numbers among the work’s most magnificent moments. Schürmann’s musical language initially suggests simplicity; it alternates between elements of song character and coloratura vibrancy and lends special emphasis to melody while resting on a solid compositional-technical foundation. On closer hearing, however, it reveals its great tonal beauty, rich imagination, and efficiency, that is, its power to appeal directly to the hearts and minds of listening audiences and to have a lasting impact on them. This opera was extraordinarily successful when it was performed a total of forty-two times in Hamburg from 1719 to 1723.
