 Allemand de naissance, Reizenstein émigra en Angleterre en 1934, à l’âge de 23 ans. Issu d’une famille juive, il fut un enfant prodige et étudia à Berlin auprès de Paul Hindemith. Plus tard, il compléta son apprentissage auprès de Vaughan-Williams. Œuvres concertantes, symphoniques, opéras, musique de chambre composent un catalogue varié. Reizenstein connut une belle notoriété après-guerre lorsqu’il participa aux célèbres Concerts Hoffnung que prisèrent tant les britanniques. Créé en 1961, le « Second Concerto pour piano » est encore marqué par le néoclassicisme d’un Hindemith, mais aussi – était-ce conscient ? – par la clarté percussive d’un Prokofiev et la brillance complexe d’un Martinu. L’œuvre, en trois mouvements, est richement orchestrée, colorée de multiples interventions des pupitres des vents. Chez Reizenstein, l’ironie apparaît toujours douce, ne brusquant jamais un flux inexorable comme dans le finale. Oliver Triendl interprète avec délicatesse les modulations harmoniques complexes d’une œuvre qui ne cède pas à l’émotion, notamment dans l’Andante tranquillo. Composée pour petit orchestre et créée en 1953, la Sérénade (arrangement d’un opus précédent pour vents) s’inscrit parfaitement dans le style anglais de l’époque : raffinement des timbres, caractère pastoral et méditatif, élégance harmonique et clin d’œil au passé baroque. Le poème symphonique « Cyrano de Bergerac » est autrement plus ambitieux. On songe ici à l’écriture du « Till Eulenspiegel » de Richard Strauss. Adrian Boult créa cette pièce en 1954. Sans atteindre le génie orchestral du compositeur autrichien, Reizenstein déploie une virtuosité d’écriture dont Yaron Traub et l’orchestre maîtrisent admirablement le romantisme nostalgique. Like Berthold Goldschmidt, Reizenstein fled from Berlin to England in 1934, before the immigration laws had been tightened. Generally speaking, Hindemith’s influence dominates in Reizenstein, though his effusive energy producing highly spirited and less sober results clearly distinguishes him from British and American composers like Rawsthorne and Berkeley. Reizenstein himself performed the solo part at the premiere of his Piano Concerto by the BBC Orchestra under Rudolf Schwarz in 1961. What stands out in this concerto is its exuberant virtuosity, which produces brilliant interplay between the soloist and the orchestra. Reizenstein’s Serenade in F numbers among the works adhering more closely to the »New Objectivity« emanating from Germany than to colorful impressionism. The last work heard here is the Cyrano de Bergerac concert overture – a powerful, energetic work and the symphonic portrait of an extremely popular stage figure working with a surprisingly modest orchestral ensemble. Here the composer in no way overlooks Cyrano’s more romantic moments.
