À l’aube perturbée des temps fascistes italiens, le compositeur et ethnographe Francesco Balilla Pratella (1880-1955) apporte son regard personnel sur l’art dans la société en général et la musique en particulier. Son essai « manifeste des musiciens futuristes » pose les bases du bruitisme, mouvement porté par son ami Luigi Russolo qui fera date jusqu’à nous - Varèse, Berio, Henry en seront les héritiers-. Paradoxalement le rejet du vériste d’un Puccini ou d’un Giordano pour un art opératique total d’un Wagner ou d’un Strauss porteront les idées de Pratella et ce sera dans sa musique de chambre que l’italien avant-gardiste subira le plus l’influence française. Alors que nous reste-t-il de l’œuvre chambriste de Francesco Balilla Pratella ? C’est ce que nous propose le Pratella Ensemble dans ce que nous imaginerions comme le pendant musical de l’univers industriel d’un Fritz Lang. Hélas, il n’en est rien et à notre grande surprise l’image est datée, dans le royaume pratellien de la tonalité, de l’harmonie et du néo-impressionnisme fauréen à la sauce bolognaise. Même dans les pages les plus futuristes, telle la marche éponyme, l’art de Pratella n’atteint pas le génie de son contemporain Prokofiev, pour ne citer que lui, ou d’un Debussy automnal dans la reprise de la chanson populaire « nous n’irons plus au bois ». Comme quoi, parfois, avec la meilleure volonté du monde l’esprit ou les écrits ne trouvent pas de corrélation avec la création. Passé la déception, la réalisation de cette anthologie est réussie, belle prise de son et mention spéciale pour le violoncelle de Nicola Babini ! À découvrir sans préjugés. Francesco Balilla Pratella, one of the most important and eclectic figures of the early-twentiethcentury cultural scene in Italy, moulded his life to the constant pursuit of spiritual ascension and the quest for the essence of man. For him, these conditions were indispensable for achieving the “humanised re-creation of the world”, the primary, essential goal of an artist-creator: “Creation, in an absolute sense, is not a human faculty; we cannot add or remove anything in the universe. But we can humanly re-create the universe, that is, translate it and re-express it with images and values that are essentially human. This is what art is, and this is what life is: a human re-creation of the world in its terms and values, and only for man: a humanisation of the world.” So he re-created the world, his world, untiringly dividing himself between musical composition, teaching, the passionate study of folk traditions, and the writing of hundreds and hundreds of theoretic, critical,musical-aesthetic and philosophic texts. The Pratella Ensemble is the interpreter of this production that collects a varied anthology of the composer's chamber production: lieder, instrumental and choral pages that reflect the work and life of a highly original author, protagonist of a historical and cultural moment - thatof the futurism - of great experimentation and artistic travail.
