Au XVIIe siècle, la ville de Naples passait pour être l’une des plus importantes villes musicales d’Europe. Parmi ceux qui contribuèrent à la notoriété de la ville grâce à leurs talents de musicien et de compositeur figurait Andrea Falconieri. De Naples, via Parme, la carrière du luthiste le mena à Florence, où il publia en 1616 son Primo libro di Villanelle, gagnant ainsi les faveurs des Médicis. Une partie de cet enregistrement aborde ces chants que Falconieri composa dans le style de la monodie, alors nouveau et en vogue. Sur d’alertes lignes mélodiques, Jan van Elsacker chante les joies et les petits tourments de l’amour. La seconde partie semble également écrite sur mesure pour l’United Continuo Ensemble, elle provient de l’œuvre tardive de Falconieri, le Primo libro de 1650, qui comporte des mouvements de danse pour un à trois instruments et basse continue. Il offre aux luthistes et violonistes pleins de tempérament une profusion de morceaux instrumentaux à la fois entraînants et groovy. Un CD qu’on ne se fera pas prier d’écouter en boucle...

In the seventeenth century, the city of Naples was considered one of Europe’s most important musical centers. Someone who helped Naples attain this renown by means of his musical and compositional talent was Andrea Falconieri. From Naples, the lutenist’s path took him via Parma to Florence, where he published his Primo libro di Villanelle in 1616, and with which he won the favor of the ruling Medici family. A part of the music on this recording comes from this collection, which Falconieri composed in the then fashionable monodic style. In fleet-footed melodic arches, Jan van Elsacker sings of the joys and also of the little pains of love. The other pieces also appear to have been tailor-made for the United Continuo Ensemble; they come from Falconieri’s late Primo libro of 1650, which contains dance movements for one to three instruments and basso continuo, and offers the spirited lute and violin players a wealth of catchy, groovy instrumental pieces.
