When you first listen to Fabio Mengozzi’s music it can be misleading. First of all because it’s enjoyable, solid, no frills, direct. Then because it allows your mind to wander among associations and suggestions that relate to various chapters of western music. However, stopping here, we would have already fallen into the trap. Under the illusion of having understood something that however has within itself many other keys to interpretation. Mind you, I say “has” and not “hides”, because a trained or a more attentive listening can identify these keys, or levels of understanding. From a compositional point of view are those at the basis of western music, such as the retrograde motion or inversion of the melodic line, such as intervallic relations or rhythmic patterns. Nothing new, except that they are not presented blatantly. To this one can add the constant use of numerical criteria that refer to the series known as the Fibonacci sequence, closely related to the well-known Golden ratio. Mengozzi makes constant use of it, from the rhythm to the intervallic sequence to the structures that give form to the pieces and their parts. Add his continual attention to the construction of his pieces based on bow forms, ternary, binary or circular ones. In certain pieces Mengozzi makes use of minimal music methods, to which however he doesn’t fully adhere to, only when he feels it’s effective. In the same way the rhythmic variations, with odd meters, are not nearly distinct, given the balance reached in the succession. All this, applied to a system that appears tonal, but which in fact is a gravitation around a polar sound, should be understood firstly as a practice of a deep awareness. Mengozzi masters the technique to the point that the listener does not even notice it.
