May 27 2017.
I never knew of Chisholm until yesterday. I heard the entire 'Danse suite' played on BBC Radio 3 while in my car yesterday afternoon. The car sound system is excellent, and although I did not know anything of Chisholm, I was completely bowled over by this music. Brabbins and the BBC SSO give a fine performance, with fine clarity and separation of the various timbres. Now, you may say that there is no other recording to compare it with. Whilst that is true, I can only say that it just hit me between the ears as astonishingly good music: clever, imaginative orchestration, with clear folk-dance influences, though whether those are Scottish or otherwise, I cannot tell. Only one hearing, of course, but I can't wait to get hold of the CD. Perhaps a clearer analysis of this will come on further listening. The piano is very relevant, but in no way dominant,, so that it is clearly 'orchestral' music: I am reminded of Bartok, or even Lutoslawski in parts (concerti pour orchestre)
I will just add that although there is news of imminent release of this CD online, and according to yesterday's radio programme it has been released, clic musique is the only dealer I was able to find actually describing it along with a picture. I will therefore make my purchase here as soon as possible. Also an excellent price for brand new release.
I will now be interested in Chisholm's piano concerti, but will be cautious to hear them first.
Five stars.
