Sacrée ambition, de la part du compositeur saint-Pétersbourgeois Eduard Kiprsky (1986-), dont la musique "en quête de sens, d’espoir et de foi, […] aspire à la contemplation des vérités éternelles, à la perfection de la nature et à son harmonie" : la grande œuvre vocale (plus d’une heure) dont il assure les parties de piano – et dont le titre, "Prayer for Peace" (prière pour la paix), annonce la couleur, où la croyance touche au mysticisme, où l’humain vaut pour son imprégnation divine –, se love dans cette (impérative) mission, au travers des poèmes de Heinrich Heine, Eduard Mörike, Hermann Hesse, Joseph von Eichendorff et Clemens Brentano, aux thèmes tout aussi existentiels, et d’une musique, en quête de la vérité du ressenti, qui, quoique pleinement post-romantique, minimise les effets démonstratifs et la virtuosité excessive, et promeut l’émotion, frôlant la frontière du pathos sans (trop) y céder – aidée en cela par la sobriété du récitatif expressif de la mezzo-soprano Margarita Gritskova (du Vienna State Opera) et du ténor Alexander Mikhailov (du Mariinsky Theatre). Pianist and composer Eduard Kiprsky, a native of St. Petersburg and winner of countless international composition awards, has long been involved with writing song cycles. On this album, titled “Friedensgebet” (Prayer for Peace), mezzo-soprano Margarita Gritskova—a beloved ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera—and Alexander Mikhailov, tenor at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, join Kiprsky at the piano to perform a selection of his songs. These settings of poems by Heinrich Heine, Eduard Mörike, Hermann Hesse, Joseph von Eichendorff, and Clemens Brentano, among others, explore doubt, loss, and suffering, yet also love, hope, and resilience. Framing the vocal works are two instrumental pieces: the Arioso for Piano, Violin, and Cello and the awardwinning “Friedensgebet” String Quartet, which lends the album its title. Kiprsky reflects: “My music strives to touch the most vulnerable facets of human existence. In its search for meaning, hope, and faith, it contemplates eternal truths—the perfection of nature and its harmony.”
