Instead of pulling one project after the other out of a hat, Fisch always finds new niches within his fiercely independent music, which oscillates between folkloric simplicity and ingenious complexity. In this vein he has added a second saxophone voice to the trio he recorded the splendid Unit album "Live at the Bird's Eye" with - and not just any old sax voice but that of Andy Scherrer, who was once his teacher and whom he can now consider his peer. Excitedly and spellbound you obsess about how Scherrer will fit into the trio format and he does it in such a convincing way that it's as if we are actually watching a quartet and not a trio with a guest player. It might sound pretentious but it's nevertheless not wrong to call this encounter a summit meeting of the grand masters. That Fisch and Scherrer are the kind of people who take care to modestly hide their light under a bushel should not detract from the fact that they, as saxophonists, by no means have to shy away from being compared with colleagues from the States who are much more famous. Together Fisch and Scherrer have nothing less than an encyclopaedic knowledge of possibilities for saxophone expression at their fingertips - their multilayered play exudes genuine wisdom, because after a few notes you begin to notice that they are not merely invoking major jazz stars but that they are transcending them. The same goes for the outstanding "drum'n'bass" duo Norbert Pfammatter / Bänz Oester, who spur on the two saxophonists and also scintillate as soloists. Even in the jazz scene people talk quite a lot of bullshit at times. Fisch's new album "Lappland" is an anti-bullshit statement par excellence. It features the work of musicians who do not thrash out phrases but use their immense ability to make essential statements. Sometimes they get right down to it, and sometimes they move towards their goal in dizzying spirals, while renouncing gimmickry and narcissistic virtuosity with confident maturity. Tom Gsteiger, February 2010
