 Seconde livraison de la série Decades, panorama de la mélodie européenne de 1810 à 1910, à raison d’une décennie par volume, ici 1820-1830. Logiquement, une bonne moitié de ce CD bien rempli (1h20 de musique) est consacrée au dernier Schubert. On avait apprécié le Kavalierbariton de Christopher Maltman en Don Giovanni, et on avait hâte de l’entendre au Lied. Le contrôle absolu du souffle, le dosage infinitésimal du timbre, la mezza-voce lui autorisent mille nuances dans l’autre "Erlkönig", celui du trop méconnu Carl Loewe, et dans le très sombre "Herr Oluf", qui plonge au plus profond de l’âme allemande. Sarah Connolly délivre de très délicats "Ellens Gesänge" (dont le célèbre "Ave Maria") en n’oubliant jamais que c’est une enfant qui chante. Apparition trop brève de John Mark Ainsley (rassurez-vous, il sera de retour dans le volume 1830-1840) qui rêve le "Sehnsucht" de Schumann et le "Winterabend" de Schubert. Hors de la sphère germanique, le somptueux soprano d’Anush Hovhannisyan nous vaut de douloureux Glinka, et deux jeunes ténors Robin Tritschler et Luis Gomes servent Niedermeyer ("Le Lac" d’après Lamartine, une merveille) et Bellini. On n’en saura pas plus sur ces trois chanteurs, faute de notices biographiques, seule petite faiblesse de cette série. Malcolm Martineau, maître d’œuvre est toujours attentif et présent, son accompagnement d’une beauté parfois surnaturelle ("Ellens Gesang I"). Vite, la suite ! Each volume features a carefully planned, varied programme performed by household names, whilst the series overall creates a comprehensive survey of song right through the nineteenth century – an invaluable teaching asset, as well as a joy for listeners. The second volume, 1820-1830, includes songs from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Russia, by Vincenzo Bellini, Mikhail Glinka, Carl Loewe, Felix Mendelssohn, Louis Niedermeyer, Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann. The three principal singers for this second volume are mezzo Sarah Connolly, tenor John Mark Ainsley and baritone Christopher Maltman, who are joined by tenors Robin Tritschler and Luis Gomes, and Armenian soprano Anush Hovhannisyan, accompanied by the series’ creator, pianist Malcolm Martineau. Of especial note is Sarah Connolly’s performance of Schubert’s three ‘Ellen Songs’, including a glorious rendition of the classic ‘Ave Maria’, Christopher Maltman’s vivid portrayal of Goethe’s ‘Erlkönig’ in Loewe’s setting, and John Mark Ainsley’s beautifully crafted renditions of songs by Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
