From the liner notes by Davide Pozzi: “Speed must not be the only purpose of the interpreter. He who plays a keyboard instrument may be a mediocre interpreter even if he is brilliant in technique”. This is the beginning of the chapter concerning interpretation, which presents innumerable ideas for a correct reading of pieces. Among other things: the fingerings proposed by him, which present us with new ideas of phrasing, the correct execution of embellishments with almost infinite examples of cases and ways of achieving them, the dissertation on touch and some suggestions that should be a warning to generations of instrumentalists: “Play with the soul and not like a trained bird, if you want to be appreciated more than he who only plays in an extravagant way” or: “Inspite of the many variations, always in fashion, it is indispensable above all to play in such a way that the fundamental features of a piece, which reveal its meaning, are clear”. The sonatas recorded on this CD testify to Bach’s inexhaustible Imaginative vein. They are very different from each other and in some cases seem to derive from opposing conceptions of composition.
