Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
"12 Poèmes d'Emily Dickinson", pour soprano et piano
Nature, the gentlest mother
There came a wind like a bugle
Why do they shut me out of Heaven?
The world feels dusty
Heart, we will forget him
Dear March, come in!
Sleep is supposed to be
When they come back
I felt a funeral in my brain
I've heard an organ talk sometimes
Going to Heaven!
The Chariot

Lucy Catherine De Butts, soprano
Giovanna Maria Gatto, piano

"The reviews were so bad, that I decided I must have written a better cycle than I had realized" remarked Aaron Copland wryly to his friend and fellow composer Leonard Bernstein following the first performance of Twelve Poems for Emily Dickinson in 1950. It did not take long for attitudes towards the song cycle to change. The cycle of nine songs by the Italian composer Carlo Galante deals with the encounter of music and poetry around the theme of "night". The duo "Emerald Ghost," consisting of soprano Lucy De Butts and pianist Giovanna Gatto, have been working together since 2019 and have chosen these two important 20th century cycles for their debut recording. In addition to captivating music, you can expect two interpreters who are yet to be heard from.
