Placée sous le signe du romantisme, cette soirée londonienne est à marquer d’une pierre blanche. La première partie du programme s’ouvre de la plus belle des façons en rendant hommage à Jerome Robbins et à l’une de ses œuvres majeures Dances at a gathering. Sur fond de décor azuréen, l’épure de la chorégraphie met en valeur la liberté de mouvement et la complicité de dix danseuses et danseurs étoiles de la compagnie ! La musique céleste de Chopin apporte à ce ballet un caractère intimiste propre à séduire le public le plus exigeant. Cette heure de poésie est suivie d’une émouvante biographie consacrée à la violoncelliste Jacqueline du Pré par la chorégraphe Cathy Marston. The Cellist est non seulement un hommage rendu à cette immense interprète disparue trop tôt mais aussi une tentative ambitieuse de personnifier sa relation avec son instrument. Cette approche, profondément originale est magnifiquement défendue par Lauren Cuthbertson et Marcelino Sambé. Dans les moments fusionnels, Cathy Marston sait trouver le ton juste. L’évocation de la douleur et de la maladie, abordée avec pudeur, est transcendée par une force bien plus grande : celle de la passion de Jacqueline du Pré pour la musique et pour son œuvre fétiche, le concerto pour violoncelle d’Edward Elgar qu’elle a si bien servi. Internationally acclaimed choreographer Cathy Marston, previously Associate Artist of The Royal Ballet and Director of Bern Ballett, created The Cellist for The Royal Ballet in 2020. The inspiration for her first work for the Royal Opera House Main Stage is the momentous life and career of cellist Jacqueline du Pré – from her discovery of the cello and her celebrity as one of its most extraordinary players, to her pain, frustration and struggle with multiple sclerosis.. Composer Philip Feeney incorporates some of the most moving and powerful music for cello by Elgar, Beethoven, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Piatti, Rachmaninoff and Schubert into an exquisite score that is itself an homage to the cello. Jerome Robbins’ elegant and elegiac classic, Dances at a Gathering, is the other work in the programme.' pure dance for five couples, set to music by Chopin, is a masterpiece of subtlety and invention.
