 Plus qu’un disque, une invitation à découvrir deux univers, celui de la poésie allemande et celui de la musique de Carl Loewe (1796-1869), compositeur allemand contemporain de Schubert et auteur lui aussi de plusieurs centaines de Lieder. Le pianiste, Christian Rorhbach ici au pianoforte, a convié le baryton-basse Félix Rathgeber et le récitant Clemens Nicol et une sonorisation d’océan (Vagues crépitantes) pour ce projet illustré dans la notice par des images, signées de la photographe Nina Roder, de corps dénudés égarés dans une nature bruissante, censés refléter la sehnsucht romantique. Les quelques chansons et ballades de Loewe basés sur des poèmes de Vogl, de Herder alternent ici avec les textes d’Heinrich Heine, de Max Frisch et d’Ingerborg Bachmann (Deux textes pénétrants). Goethe est évidemment représenté dans les lieder et les lectures, notamment par le fameux "Erlkönig". Félix Rathgeber se révèle un bon diseur doté d’un timbre à la fois polyvalent et d’une émouvante fragilité, capable de restituer l’esprit des lieder du compositeur et la diversité de leurs affects. Autre source de réjouissance : les extraits de la grande Sonate Brillante op. 41 de Loewe rehaussée ici par un somptueux hammerflügel. J’avais oublié de mentionner qu’il s’agissait d’une soirée de concert à l’église d’Heusenstamm. Mémorable sans aucun doute. Seul bémol : le disque n’incluant ni textes ni traductions est plutôt destiné aux germanophones. (Jérôme Angouillant) The program presented on this Album, featuring songs and ballads by Carl Loewe along with texts and poems by Heinrich Heine, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Max Frisch, and Ingeborg Bachmann, reflects the human relationship with the sea in various ways. Carl Loewe, who as cantor and organist was an important figure in Stettin in the mid 1800s, was so inspired by the sea during his travels that he wrote many songs and ballads that thematise the sea. The fortepiano No. 231 by Carl Julius Gebauhr from 1841 heard on this recording dates from Loewe's creative period, and although it is not known on which instruments Loewe played in Königsberg, it is at least possible that it was an instrument by Gebauhr, whose workshop was located in Königsberg. This live recording of a song recital is one of the programs where the art forms of song interpretation and recitation complement each other to create a comprehensive dramaturgy. Nina Röder‘s paintings also inspire the listener visually, expanding the horizons of the program. The viewer is led to enchanted places in the works from her series “Über das Verschwinden” (About Disappearance) and encounters mysterious beings. This visual yet poetic perspective completes the circle by confronting the transience of humanity and nature – a theme more relevant than ever in times of climate change and rising sea levels.
