"solidaire/solitaire" (soilidary/solitary), two words delineate worlds. The world of jazz, which from day one has derived its energy from the tension between the solidarity within the community and the will of the individual, and the world of the Aquarian Jazz Ensemble of Hamburg drummer Björn Lücker, in which this conceptual pair is especially highlighted by two compositions on their debut album. this is no coincidence: again and again this quintet makes it clear how much it focuses on the dialectic of the individual and the community, from strict form and ecstatic contribution. On the one hand, there are the carefully well-balanced compositions, all from Lücker's pen, which draw on classic harmony, melodic beauty and rhythmic vitality; on the other hand, there is Lücker's cadre of allies, who develop their own pathes outward within the path of the composition. Ever since Björn Lücker became one of the pioneers of new German jazz some twenty years ago with the group Triocolor, he has worked in Hamburg as a bridgebuilder between jazz and new music, groove and onomatopoeia, free and idiomatic improvisation. The words "solidaire/solitaire" describe the playing field, and in his Aquarian Jazz Ensemble, this form of play comes to fruition using conflicting impulses.
