This project answers Tommaso Rossi’s proposal to follow up a mythological musical thread dedicated to the contralto recorder, starting from a composition, Tre Micro-meliche di Apollo and Marsia I had written for him and violinist Daniele Colombo on the occasion of the 2008 Dissonanzen+Suona Francese Festival. The idea was to explore the timbric and technical possibilities of this instrument outside the more frequented baroque environment, by using up to date composition practices, some of which derived from electronic music. Over time, this idea transformed itself into a larger, double track, project in which the old and the new instruments, i. e. the recorder and the flute, are continuously invited to metamorphosize into one another. The recorder is the element which links together three separate works dedicated to it, Tre Micro-meliche di Apollo e Marsia, La voce di Orfeo and Lasso vo io…, where the timbre goes between past and present in a continuous transformation until it reaches an almost “electronic” sound. Jacob van Eyck’s works taken from his “Der Fluyten Lust-hof” alternate with these and other works of mine –, Amarilli mia bella, Daphne and Bravade – which follow the original technique of variation/diminution of a main theme to become, here, “variations/inventions” reimagined for the flute in a style and with a sonority approaching those of its forefather: the recorder. In the course of this research on sound, I have always tried to respect the musical idea in its expressive movement; an idea I would never sacrifice to mere experimentation.
