 Voici un éloquent programme judicieusement choisi pour illustrer le thème central du Romantisme allemand, à savoir la Sehnsucht, expression d’un manque existentiel, à la fois nostalgie et aspiration. L’opus 98 de Beethoven, courte mais superbe composition d’un musicien déjà marqué par la maladie, s’inscrit définitivement dans l’histoire du lied puisqu’il en constitue le premier cycle, terme d’autant plus adapté que le dernier de ces six poèmes de tonalité élégiaque d’Alois Jeitteles se clôt sur une mélodie identique à celle qui ouvre l’ensemble, le texte lui-même induisant cette construction en arche. L’opus D. 957 de Schubert est une édition posthume, plus composite, de poèmes alliant à la mélancolie des textes de Rellstab ou celui de Seidl la noirceur de ceux de Heine, le dernier poème répondant ici aussi thématiquement au premier. Un programme que les deux interprètes, habitués à se produire ensemble en récital, défendent avec cohérence, même si la notion de cycle semble pouvoir impliquer plus de nuances et de contrastes dans l’interprétation. La voix du baryton est suave, la présence du piano sensible, à la fois intelligente et expressive. Au total, si l’interprétation ne côtoie pas l’alternance de sommets et d’abîmes visités par certains artistes, le pari artistique est tenu. Music, let alone the musical genre of the art-song, is no exception. Catch-all headings make matters easier. The two song cycles on this CD certainly qualify as artsongs. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) wrote his opus 98 in 1816; musicologists commonly describe An die ferne Geliebte (to the distant beloved) as the first ever song cycle. Franz Schubert (1797–1828) wrote his Schwanengesang (swan song) in 1828, the year of his death; the songs were posthumously made into a collection. In terms of its musicological and sociological development, the Lied, having long been considered “inferior”, underwent a kind of emancipation process throughout the early modern period up until the start of the 19th century, when the emergence of the educated middle-class, particularly in the German-speaking world, allowed the new genre to take root. Such songs were performed at small venues too: in salons, small halls and before audiences that were not necessarily aristocratic or courtly. Dynamically versatile and affordable, the piano was now a common keyboard instrument and was often used to accompany the vocalist with supportive harmonies and melodic counterpoint.
