Une Passion selon Saint Jean d'aujourd'hui (2018), enregistrée en live in situ à la Thomaskirche de Leipzig, et dirigé par un disciple de Bach, un serviteur de sa musique : Peter Schreier. Vous ne pouviez y être ? En voici l'enregistrement. Nul besoin de forces colossales : le chœur (Sächsischer Kammerchor) et l'orchestre (Mitteldeutsche Visrtuosen) sont en nombre honorable, un chef de chœur (nécessaire) Fabian Enders et à la tête de cet ensemble, un metteur en scène, indispensable pour cette partition plusieurs fois révisée par Bach : Herr Doktor Schreier. Dès l'entrée en matière de la première partie (VorderPredigt), Jésus et l'Evangéliste apparaissent de manière quasi holographique. Comme dirait mon petit voisin (10 ans) on s'y croirait ! La magie opère. Bach a fait œuvre universelle, hors du temps, mais restituée ici dans le vaste espace de l'église. Les trois airs qui suivent sont de pures volutes d'ADN. Flûtes et hautbois ondulent autour des voix solistes comme le serpent d'Epidaure enlaçant la coupe. Des récitatifs haletants, des chorals pénétrants, si la qualité des chanteurs est hélas variable et souvent perfectible, on s'attache indéfectiblement au fil d'un récit pas toujours linéaire. Chaque épisode (qu'il faudrait détailler), aussi minime soit-il, est ainsi traité avec une conviction inébranlable. Du fulminant « Kreuzige Kreuzige ! » jusqu'à l'air d'alto « Est is Vollbracht » (ici curieusement apaisé) la progression dramatique assumée par les forces en présence nous interpelle. Magie du lieu ? Famous for his performances of the Evangelist in Bach’s oratorios and passions, the highly regarded Bach-expert Peter Schreier has also garnered international acclaim as a conductor. For the present project, he has taken to the podium once more. The disc’s live recording from St Thomas’s Church, Leipzig, captures a remarkable performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245). Under the direction of Peter Schreier, the Sächsischer Kammerchor and the Mitteldeutsche Virtuosen present a truly gripping, profound rendition of Bach’s masterpiece. The Sächsischer Kammerchor and the Mitteldeutsche Virtuosen, performing on modern instruments, give eloquent testimony to their exceptional musical skills. Bach’s chorales, which are so essential to the St John Passion, radiate with poignant intimacy and expressive power. The ensemble of soloists, too, has been selected wisely. Martin Petzold offers a superb performance as the Evangelist. Staying close to the text, Petzold skilfully leads his audience through the Passion narrative. A further highlight: Patrick Grahl, who had sung as a young tenor several time under the direction of Peter Schreier. He was awarded first prize at the International Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Wettbewerb in Leipzig. His impressive vocal presence allows him to master the challenging arias with great aplomb.
