En 1945, le jeune chef Andrzej Panufnik est chargé de redonner vie à l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Cracovie, rameutant des instrumentistes disséminés au quatre coins du pays. Il fait de même l’année suivante à Varsovie, tout en s’acharnant à reconstruire ses œuvres brulées pendant la guerre. Parmi elles, ses deux premières symphonies, qu’il ne reconstituera finalement jamais. Mais, dès 1948, le Réalisme Socialiste Soviétique s’impose, à l’art en général, au compositeur en particulier, exigeant une musique « positive », fusse-t-elle artificielle. Brimé, meurtri, en panne d’écriture, Panufnik s’exile en 1954 vers le Royaume-Uni, où il trouve travail et inspiration - sans abandonner son enracinement culturel polonais. Réservé, n’aimant rien mieux que travailler tranquillement à l’abri des regards, l’homme compose, en retrait de la scène musicale. Ni dans la ligne soviétique, ni dans celle qui domine alors le monde occidental, il peaufine une esthétique personnelle, à la recherche constante de « l'équilibre parfait entre intellect et émotion, cœur et esprit » : textures simples, accessibles (Sinfonia Sacra, 1963), influence folklorique (Polonia, 1959), sans négliger rythme (Autumn Music, 1962) ou atmosphère (Sinfonia di Sfere, 1975). Andrzej Panufnik was born in Warsaw in 1914 and rapidly developed his career as a conductor and composer, before the Communists decried him as an alleged formalist and decadent artist. In 1954 he fled to England, where he was granted political asylum and with this status ceased to exist in official Poland. His international reputation steadily grew; he was awarded lucrative compositional commissions, principally from the United States, and increasingly felt at home in England. Leading conductors like Stokowski, Horenstein, and Solti performed his works. Panufnik always stood out like an erratic block in the compositional landscape of the »Free World« of the West because he never associated himself with the methods of serial composition then both current and dominant. »For me music is always the expression of the deepest human feeling and genuine emotion. The spiritual and poetic content is therefore very essential and has a decided influence on the construction. In all my works I attempt to form a real balance between emotion and intellect – an equilibrium of heart and mind, of motivation and construction.« We are now releasing a box featuring Panufnik’s complete symphonic works and concertos at a special low price.
