Ewa Gawronska, soprano

La soprano polonaise Ewa Gawronska reste une belle inconnue pour le mélomane francophone. La notice d’accompagnement (polonais et anglais) nous apprend qu’elle a mené une courte et brillante carrière à l’opéra national de Varsovie et qu’elle a beaucoup tourné en Europe et en Amérique du Nord. Elle nous est révélée par ce recueil d’enregistrements de la Radio polonaise des années 1983 à 1989 (certaines vidéos sont disponibles sur YouTube) qui démontre l’aisance et l’expressivité de la chanteuse dans tous les genres : l’opérette – "La Contesse Dubarry" de l’Autrichien Carl Joseph Millöcker et "Princesse Czardas" du Hongrois Emmerich Kálmán que chantèrent pendant des années le duo Marcel Merkès et Paulette Merval au Théâtre Mogador de Paris ; les grands standards des opéras de Mozart, Verdi et Puccini mais c’est surtout dans ses interprétations des œuvres de ses compatriotes, notamment Moniuszko, le père de l’opéra national, qu’elle donne toute la mesure de son art avec un très bel extrait de l’opéra "Halka" et un duo exigeant de l’opéra contemporain "Manekiny" (Mannequins) de Zbigniew Rudzinski. La mélodie intime enfin nous réserve de belles découvertes à l’image de trois chansons polonaises de Chopin et deux chants de Szymanowski. (Gérard Martin)

The album contains a collection of recordings documenting the short but brilliant career of Ewa Gawronska, endowed with a beautiful, characteristic soprano voice. She was a soloist of the Warsaw Chamber Opera, the Warsaw Operetta, the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera and the Theatre in St. Gallen; she performed in almost all European and North American countries. The album features recordings with the participation of Warsaw orchestras, as well as with the accompaniment of pianist Barbara Ropelewska, of whom the soprano was very fond and with whom she was friends. The CD includes famous arias and songs, mainly by Polish composers, including Moniuszko, Szymanowski, Rózycki and Chopin, as well as arias from the staple repertoire of world operatic and operetta stages. Regardless of the era, genre and nature of the presented works, the artist’s interpretations are distinguished by extraordinary musicality, precision and excellent vocal technique. The album is a symbolic return of the diva to Poland, a gift for lovers of her talent who remember the artist’s live performances, as well as for those who have a chance to get to know her thanks to recordings.
