(Danielle Porte)

Thanks to Cecilia Bartoli, who rediscovered the Baroque arias of the almost forgotten master Agostino Steffani a few years ago. The Italian Steffani arrived at age 13 from Italy at the court of the Bavarian elector Ferdinand Maria. Following his profound musical training he was appointed chamber music director, a position he kept until 1688 in Munich. Further places in Steffani’s career, who meanwhile had received his ordination as a priest, were the courts in Hanover and Brussels. Steffani’s life took at the same time also place in high diplomatic circles between Germany and the Vatican. His compositional style united French, German and Italian elements and far beyond his death especially the so called chamber duets were praised among his creations, besides his operas. These charming compositions for soprano, alto and basso continuo were originally presented in aristocratic circles of connoisseurs, “Crudo Amor“ was dedicated to Sophia Charlotte, later Queen of Prussia. Invitations from many influential European courts provided exactly the advantageous environment for Steffani, a scintillating figure between secret political missions and the concert hall. Forma Antiqva under the musical direction of Aarón Zapico perform this emotional and technical virtuoso music with the soprano Eugenia Boix and the alto Carlos Mena. The young Spanish belong to the most eminent ensembles of the international Baroque scene and tell and interpret Agostino Steffani’s "Dangerous Liaisons" in the passionate territory of Baroque emotions.
