 Associé au courant allemand de la « nouvelle simplicité », le post-moderne Manfred Trojahn se distingue de l’avant-garde des années 1960-1970 : il manifeste peu de goût pour l’atonalité et ne craint ni les harmonies traditionnelles ni l’héritage romantique des symphonies du XIX e siècle - en témoigne sa courte et malicieuse Bagatelle, Scherzo Frammento (Hommage à L.v.B.). Il assume sa subjectivité, en opposition à l’objectivisme exacerbé en vogue après John Cage, particulièrement dans ce Quatuor à Cordes n° 2, composé durant sa résidence d’un an à Villa Massimo de Rome en 1979-1980 et qui, à l’image des moments difficiles qu’il vit alors (il ne s’y sent pas à sa place, est en manque de Paris, refuse toutefois de gâcher une telle opportunité), alterne les phases d’émotion intense, les moments calmes, profonds et les élancements lyriques. Méticuleusement peaufiné avec le Quatuor Minguet, la mezzosoprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner et le clarinettiste Thorsten Johanns, Trojahn, plus coutumier des symphonies (5) ou des opéras (6), livre avec cette commande de Radio France créée à Paris en 1980, une œuvre personnelle, intime - qui se conclut, avec Abgesang, par un récapitulatif empruntant aux mouvements précédents. (Bernard Vincken) Manfred Trojahn was invited to the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1979/80 to work on his Second String Quartet, which had been commissioned by Radio France. What initially seemed like a golden opportunity for a young composer turned out to be a difficult period in Trojahn’s life, and this was reflected in the quartet, which moves restlessly between emotional outbursts, stasis, brusqueness, and moments of almost tender lyricism. The work documents a young composer’s search for an individual musical language in the early days of what we would now call the postmodern period. Manfred Trojahn was not interested in atonal dogma; the tonal relationships in his music reveal many sources of inspiration, including Romantic composers. “Hommage à L.v.B.” is an ironic tribute to the Classical tradition, while in “Abgesang” [Farewell], Trojahn brings together diverse elements from earlier sections of the piece: restless fluttering motifs, elegiac cantilena passages, and bizarre clusters. To prepare this production of what is for him a very personal work, the composer worked closely with the Minguet Quartet, mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, and clarinetist Thorsten Johanns. The fruits of their efforts can be heard in this impressive recording.
