Le sort terrible de la jeune et belle Béatrice Cenci a inspiré nombre d’artistes, écrivains ou musiciens. Ainsi, en 1950, c’est à partir de l’œuvre du poète romantique Shelley que Goldschmidt proposera cet opéra, en version anglaise, à Londres où il avait dû s’exiler lors de l’avènement du nazisme dans sa propre patrie. Mais il vécut assez longtemps pour en tirer, trente ans plus tard, la version en allemand présentée ici. La musique, sur un rythme plutôt syllabique, sert assez bien le texte, et semble naviguer entre Mahler et Weill. On l’a parfois rapprochée de Chostakovitch. À juste titre. Mais on est tout de même loin des innovations que proposèrent d’autres musiciens germaniques au 20e s. avec ce que cela permet d’expressivité dramatique. Dans cette production du Festival de Brégence (2018), la mise en scène se présente comme une caricature somptueuse, parfois racoleuse, sorte de grand guignol haut en couleur. Côté interprétation et jeu, on concèdera que si Gal James, dans le rôle-titre, est un peu outrée, les seconds rôles sont souvent de qualité. Enfin, la captation vidéo se révèle plutôt efficace. Il faut cependant noter que le DVD ne comporte pas de sous-titres en français. (Alain Monnier)

Church corruption, human violence & a daughter who plots revenge on her abusive father – Goldschmidt’s Beatrice Cenci has every ingredient for a gripping opera & the story of its origins is equally fascinating albeit tragic: The Jewish composer, who fled Germany for London in 1935, was awarded a prize for his work, but the promised performance never took place. It was not until 1988 that it received its premiere as a concert performance. At Bregenz Festival, stage director Johannes Erath brought Beatrice Cenci on stage for the first time. Although written 70 years ago, "one musically quickly associates Puccini or other Romantics" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), underlined by Goldschmidt´s own words, saying it became a real "Belcanto-Opera". "Johannes Debus conducts the Wiener Symphoniker with true feeling for the score". "In the title role, Gal James is moving" and "the baritone Christoph Pohl has all the vocal charisma" (The Telegraph).
