Bien que Bernardo Pasquini (1637-1710) fût organiste de lieux bien en vue à Rome (dont Santa Maria Maggiore, Santa Maria in Aracoeli), son oeuvre surabondante (142 pièces répertoriées) ne comporte pas de pièces à proprement parler liturgiques, même si un certain nombre sont jouables à l’orgue. Les 15 Sonates à deux clavecins ont la particularité de ne comporter... qu’une seule portée par instrument, avec un simple chiffrage de la basse. Cela laisse supposer que la part de l’improvisation y était considérable. La présente version « à deux clavecins » proposée par le duo MarinaScaioli/Franscesco Tasini adopte une réalisation totalement écrite, ce qui contredit le principe de l’improvisation supposée. Que dire de l’interprétation ? Les sept premières sonates ne consistent qu’en un alignement « correct » d’accords, tous joués sans aucun accent. Heureusement, à partir de la sonate 8, cela s’arrange quelque peu, les pièces devenant plus mélodiques et étant jouées plus finement. Mais on est loin de l’enregistrement ancien (Erato) de Marie-Claire Alain et Luigi Fernando Tagliavini, sur deux orgues ! (Jean-Paul Lécot)

The recording of the two harpsichord sonatas by Bernardo Pasquini, master of the Italian style of the organ and harpsichord in the period between the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth century, is a particularly interesting cameo in the panorama of the music dedicated to the genre of the partimento, advanced practice of the basso continuo that in Italy formed the basis of compositional and keyboard teaching in the 18th century Neapolitan school. In fact the sonatas consist of only the bass lines on which the two performers must create the entire composition thanks to the technical and expressive expertise obtained from a consummate knowledge and experience of the performance practice of the time. Marina Scaioli and Francesco Tasini face this instrumental 'challenge’ on two Italian historical harpsichords copies: a 1725 Giovanni Ferrini and a 1778 Roberto and Federigo Cresci.
