Magnifique réédition de deux CD en tout point exceptionnels. On sait combien Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau a œuvré pour les lieder de Wolf qu’on connaît avant tout dans leur version pour voix et piano. Mais on néglige trop souvent le fait que le compositeur a offert à certains d’entre eux une parure orchestrale qui en magnifie le lyrisme tellement personnel. DFD y joint aussi des réalisations dues à Gunter Raphael, Max Reger et le plus surprenant Kim Borg. Fascinant éclairage sur de purs joyaux du lied empreints d’une compréhension des textes (et quels ! Goethe, Mörike, Eichendorff…) sans égale. Le second CD change totalement d’atmosphère avec quatre grandes pages de Reger, deux faisant en outre intervenir le chœur. Vastes morceaux qui convoquent Eichendorff, Hebbel ou Hölderlin et évoquent davantage la rhapsodie pour contralto de Brahms mais avec un orchestre qui se souvient de Tristan. Inoubliable ensemble qui rappelle la curiosité sans limite du chanteur et bénéficie de l’accompagnement subtil de Stefan Soltesz dans Wolf et de la connaissance du post-romantisme germanique de Gerd Albrecht, autre explorateur passionné d’un monde sonore trop méconnu, dans Reger. Album d’autant plus précieux que, trente ans après ces enregistrements, il demeure sans rival dans la discographie. Un trésor assurément… (Richard Wander)

Hardly any other singer was more associated with and devoted to the nigh 300 songs by the Austrian composer Hugo Wolf than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Utterly convinced by the richness of Wolf’s oeuvre, Fischer-Dieskau took Wolf’s previously hardly heeded songs to many stages throughout the world. Reger was frowned upon as an ‘awkward traditionalist’ and ‘piece worker’, but Reger’s songs show a completely different, moving and profound side of the composer, who takes a significant position in the song composition of the turn of the century. Even Fischer-Dieskau did not devote himself to Reger exactly frequently, unlike his downright encyclopaedic approach in other fields. In his recording of a number of particularly fine gems among Reger’s orchestral songs, he was supported by Gerd Albrecht. The outcome is an artistic symbiosis of the highest quality, testifying to a passion and ardency that can be found seldom: a veritable sound document
