2017. Le Festival de Pâques de Salzbourg revisite la Walkyrie mise en scène par Karajan 50 ans plus tôt. L’originale était très en dessous des visions picturales du Neues Bayreuth. Entre temps, le Regietheater a fait ses ravages, et on est soulagé de voir un spectacle qui ne nuit ni à la musique ni aux chanteurs. Christian Thielemann fut l’assistant de Karajan. Qu’a-t-il retenu des leçons du maître ? Au-delà de la beauté sonore enivrante de la Staatskapelle, le discours est grandiloquent et creux. On est loin de ce que le chef salzbourgeois faisait du Ring. Vocalement, quel luxe ! Sieglinde incandescente d’Anja Harteros, Siegmund d’une humanité déchirante d’un Peter Seiffert malheureusement éprouvé par ses Tristan. La Brünnhilde d’Anja Kampe, voix saine aux aigus d’airain convoque les mânes de Birgit Nilsson. Georg Zeppenfeld, c’est presque trop de beauté vocale pour une brute épaisse comme Hunding. Vitalij Kowaljow ne peine jamais en Wotan dont il a l’exacte tessiture de basse-baryton, et confère à son personnage l’autorité implacable du dieu, la tendresse du père, et la détresse de l’homme prisonnier de son devoir. Malgré la faiblesse de la direction et de la mise en scène, une publication qui s’imposait. (Olivier Gutierrez)

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Salzburg Easter Festival presents a “Re-creation” of Die Walküre: of Herbert von Karajan’s musico-theatrical vision of the 19th century masterwork, with which the legendary Maestro opened the very first Easter Festival in 1967. The top-ranking ensemble of singers performs in the faithfully reconstructed scenery of the original production with impressive video backdrops inspired by the original glass paintings. Christian Thielemann, who has been assistant of Karajan in his beginnings, counts among the world’s foremost Wagner conductors, “… there is an absolute polish to this performance that is exceptional” writes the Financial Times about the conductor and orchestra. The critics are full of praise for this “musically ravishing Walküre” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) and its “excellent ensemble of soloists”. As Sieglinde, Anja Harteros is “enchanting and elegant”, Peter Seiffert “amazingly presents a steady and expressive Siegmund”, Christa Mayer “shows off as irresistible, throroughbred Fricka” and Anja Kampe is celebrated as “outstanding Brünnhilde” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). “Musically it was superb.” (The Spectator)
