14 août 2011, Bayreuth accueille un petit nouveau, Andris Nelsons, qui se risque à Lohengrin sur la colline sacrée. Contre les relectures récentes qui depuis celle d’Abbado tiraient l’univers du Chevalier au cygne vers des allégements poétiques à la Weber, Nelsons replonge le drame d’Elsa dans une atmosphère de cauchemar. Quelle ambiance méphitique tout au long d’un deuxième acte anthologique où triomphe dans cet orchestre vénéneux l’Ortud à la justesse approximative de Petra Lang. Couple infernal somptueux malgré ses écarts, le Telramund de Jukka Rasilainen étant aussi noir que son Ortrud sorcière. Sur tout ce théâtre mortifère, le haut ténor de Klaus Florian Vogt déploie le chant si lumineux d’un Lohengrin vraiment venu d’un autre monde, Nelsons lui dorant des accompagnements d’orchestre irréels. Annette Dasch fait son Elsa mozartienne, un modèle dans le genre. Débarrassé d’un spectacle convenu, on redécouvre de Lohengrin où un grand wagnérien se dévoilait. Lohengrin is staged by the enfant terrible Hans Neuenfels, and offers a thought-provoking production of brilliant visual clarity. The performance by Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role is staggering and impressive. There is beauty and purity in his voice, but in this role in particular, one truly senses something unheimlich, other-worldly, which fits superlatively both with work and production. Conductor Andris Nelsons brings out the best in the festival chorus and orchestra. It is a Lohengrin one does not easily forget and puts Bayreuth back in the vanguard of Wagner interpretation.
