 Cantor de la ville de Hambourg (Après avoir refusé le poste à Leipzig, qui sera attribué à Bach), Telemann était obligé de composer des cantates pour les cinq églises de la ville, une passion chaque année, ainsi que des œuvres occasionnelles. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach qui succèdera à Telemann à Hambourg sera nettement moins prolixe dans ce domaine, et ne subsistent de lui quelques œuvres religieuses dont cette cantate qui complète l'album. Les trois cantates qui font l'objet de ce disque ont en commun des effectifs somptueux (bois, trompettes, timbales) destinés à célébrer les fêtes de Pâques et de l'Ascension, d'où leur qualiticatif de "festif". Leur structure est immuable : choeurs, récitatifs, ariosos sans nécessité d'une sinfonia d'introduction. Telemann associe comme le veut Neumeister (La cantate doit être un sermon orné ) langage musical et commentaire exégétique. Les arias assez brèves sont donc plutôt illustratives sans le dialogue d'un soliste instrumental (comme chez Bach), les choeurs sont volubiles, la polyphonie toujours riche, étoffée par les cordes et les bois, le contrepoint fleuri. La cantate "Er neigte den Himmel" regorge d'idées musicales. Un choeur d'entrée déchirant (Choeur des Anges). Un Christ vainqueur (Aria de ténor) malgré le timbre revêche de Georg Poplutz, et un formidable duetto Soprano-Alto. Les deux beaux Veni sancte spiritus, suppléments au programme, écrits d'une plume souveraine, réclament les quatre solistes et un vigoureux soutien instrumental. La cantate de Carl Philipp Emanuel débute par un magnifique choeur fugué déclamant "Gott hat den Herrn auferwecket", suivi par un poignant récitatif accompagné et un air de basse "Dr sing ich froh... " , fort bien incarné par Matthias Vieweg. Un allègre air de soprano joliment chanté (Véronica Winter, radieuse et attendrissante) et un bref choral concluent la cantate. Interprétation aussi soignée que festive du Rheinische Kantorei et du Kleine Konzert dirigés par le valeureux Hermann Max. (Jérôme Angouillant) The Twenty-Second Magdeburg Telemann Festival Days in March 2014 celebrated the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Telemann’s godson and successor, with a program entitled »Generations: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann.« The festival program offered concertgoers the opportunity to experience the similarities and differences in the music of these protagonists representing two compositional generations and traced lines of development in musical style. The live concert recording presented here features sacred compositions by Telemann and Bach written about the same time for Hamburg, some of which were first performed in modern times at the Magdeburg Telemann Festival Days. The Hamburg music director Telemann maintained intensive contact with composers of the younger generation into the late years of his life, exchanged ideas with them, and was interested in developments in the new musical style being formed by them. For their part, younger composers looked up – not without great veneration – to the »father of music« (Johann Heinrich Rolle, 1767) and intensively studied or performed his compositions, which left their mark on German music life over many decades. Among Telemann’s contacts, those with his godson and later successor Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach are especially significant. A great part of the church compositions brought together here, all of them connected with the liturgical performance of music at Hamburg’s five principal churches, number among the documents attesting to their relationship.
