There is a reason why we say that spontaneous ideas tend to be the best. It’s how this album came to life – spontaneously. In September 2016, during a concert I met father Robert Kaczorowski. A common performance resulted in a will to get to know each other better and continue working together. When I was sending Robert my recordings, he gave me a very nice telephone call thanking me and proposing to write a mass in honour of St. Nicholas, patron of his parish’s Church. That’s how the 9-part Missa Sancti Nicolai for soprano, baritone and organs was created. The ordinarium parts are duos with organs’ accompaniment, whereas the proper (Introit, Graduale, Communio) are intended for baritone and organs. Offertorium and Toccata Finale were written for organs solo. The proper refer to the melodies and texts of chorales from the breviary’s office in Latin, inspired by the day of St. Nicholas’ remembrance. Their development reflects my fascination with Maurice Duruflé’s work, a French composer and organist.
