 Ottorino Respighi n’avait rien d’un révolutionnaire et ce n’est pas son œuvre d’orgue, qui tient tout entier sur ce disque, qui le démentira : on est ici dans la lignée d’un Liszt ou d’un Reger. Tactus avait déjà publié la partie de cet enregistrement captée en 2001 dans la Cathédrale de Saluzzo. Mais la Suite en sol majeur pour cordes et orgue est regravée avec un nouvel orchestre et le Prélude pour orgue de 1916 apparaît pour la première fois. On entendra deux fois l’Aria de la Suite, originellement écrit pour violon et orgue, arrangé pour cordes puis transcrit pour l’orgue seul. A l’évidence, c’est dans les différents Préludes que s’exprime le mieux la patte du Bolognais. Leur pendant, plein d’un charme un peu désuet, se trouve dans la Suite, que Respighi qualifiait lui-même d’antique, donnée ici avec la version « longue » de son Prélude, sorte de synthèse de la Symphonie classique de Prokofiev et du Concerto pour orgue de Poulenc. La délicieuse Pastorale, elle, évoque autant l’Angleterre de Vaughan-Williams que la campagne d’Emilie-Romagne. Voilà qui nous change de Pins et des Fontaines de Rome ! Yet it deserves a very special attention because, despite its minor size if compared to the entire corpus of Respighi work, it shows a very secure musical writing capacity rarely found in a non practicing organist composer. Admired by Igor Stravinskij, Alfredo Casella, Georg Gershwin, Giacomo Puccini as well as by men of science and culture like Augusto Righi, Enrico Fermi, Albert Einstein and Gabriele d’Annunzio (who called him “pure and firm voice over this confused world of stutterers”), Respighi is partly inspired by Bach (whose admiration is certainly reinforced by his friendship with Ferruccio Busoni) and by Reger German School, without losing sight over the Italian masters’ music heritage. Andrea Macinanti on the extraordinary Serassi-Vegezzi Bossi (1855-1910) organ of the Saluzzo Cathedral, and on the equally mighty Mascioni-Zanin (1951- 2011) organ, is the interpreter of the music by Respighi after also editing the printed edition. The Academia Symphonica di Udine, formed by young musicians led by Pier Angelo Pelucchi, crowns the CD by performing the beautiful Suite for strings and organ.
